Effectiveness of Balance and Stabilization Exercises in Junior Ice Hockey Players

Ice hockey is characterized by high demands on dynamic stability, postural control, coordination, and neuromuscular function. Adequate balance and stabilization abilities are essential not only for optimal sports performance but also for reducing the risk of injury. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a balance and stabilization exercise program in junior ice hockey players using the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) and the Y-Balance Test (YBT). The research sample consisted of 50 junior ice hockey players divided into an intervention group (n = 25) and a control group (n = 25). Both groups completed baseline and post-intervention assessments. The intervention group completed a structured balance and stabilization exercise program, while the control group continued their regular training process without additional intervention. Statistical analysis included paired t-test, independent t-test and Mann–Whitney U test with the significance level set at p < 0.05. Within the intervention group, statistically significant improvements were observed in several Functional Movement Screen components and in the composite score of the Y-Balance Test for both lower extremities (p < 0.05). However, comparison between the intervention and control groups did not reveal statistically significant differences in any evaluated parameter (p > 0.05). The implemented exercise program positively influenced movement quality and dynamic stability within the intervention group. Although no significant between-group differences were confirmed, the findings suggest that balance and stabilization exercises may represent an effective component of injury prevention and performance enhancement in junior ice hockey players.
